Experience
Iain has been a trial lawyer for over 30 years, but now practices as a mediator. Although he has argued cases in all levels of court in British Columbia, he rarely saw a courtroom. The vast majority of his cases settled, many at mediation, as a result of thorough fact investigation; detailed legal analysis; and skilled negotiation.
Practice Areas
Following articles with a small criminal law firm, Iain started in practice assisting senior counsel in a wide range of complex commercial litigation disputes. Iain is an expert in Occupiers' Liability; and for years acted for a multinational insurer, defending injury and other claims, and providing coverage opinions.
Speaking & Teaching
Iain has guest lectured at the University of British Columbia on Occupiers' Liability topics. He has presented papers on practice topics; the law of loss of earning capacity; owner v. driver insurance priorities; and the law of constructive trusts and promises of inheritance.
Outside the Office
For fun, Iain enjoys biking and skiing. Travels include Nepal and Tibet, Malaysia, Peru, Italy, Syria and Jordan. He is a proud father of a softball playing daughter and a go-kart racing son. As a collector of stamps - 19th century “fancy” postal cancellations - though Iain’s scholarship Lacelle #1404 is now known to originate from Toronto, and in use in January 1880.
Education
Iain graduated from the University of Western Ontario with an Honors Degree in History in 1991, obtaining his Bachelor of Law in 1994 from the University of British Columbia.
Iain has Family Law ADR Accreditation as a Family Law Mediator through the Law Society of British Columbia.
